Roman Votive Statue Goddess Cybele

This votive statue is a replica of a piece from the 2nd century AD. Nowadays it is part of the colletion of the Germanisches Landesmuseum in Trier. Small statues of Cybele were placed on house altars throughout the whole Roman empire.

Cybele or Kybele was a goddess of Frygian origin and was equated to the Greek Rhea by the Romans. Cybele was the Magna Mater (Mother goddess or great Mother) and was venerated as fertility goddess.

This statue is made from alabaster and is 17 cm high. Possibly such small statues were painted, which made them have a lifelike appearance.
